In the small intestine, bile produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder , pancreatic enzymes, and other digestive enzymes produced by the inner wall of the small intestine further assist with the breakdown of food. Air enters the larynx anteriorly but anything swallowed has priority and the passage of air is temporarily blocked. Mastication of the food with the help of saliva and mucus results in the formation of a soft bolus which can then be swallowed to make its way down the upper gastrointestinal tract to the stomach. The whole digestive system is in the form of a long, hollow, twisted and turned tube, called the alimentary canal, which starts from the oral cavity and ends at the anus. See also gastrointestinal tract.
